Nicholas P. Zalany

Professional Biography:
Nick Zalany joined Carpenter Lipps & Leland LLP in July 2006, after obtaining his LL.M. from New York University School of Law and working for a Manhattan law firm. Since joining the Firm, Nick has worked on a variety of commercial and bankruptcy litigation matters, including an arbitration in California, a large consumer class action in Pennsylvania, and litigation Involving major financial institutions. Additionally, Nick has been involved in appellate drafting in appeals before multiple Ohio courts of appeals, the Ohio Supreme Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He also served as second chair for a bench trial in Cleveland that resulted in a $1.7 million verdict for the firm's client. Nick has drawn on his intellectual property background (having focused on patent and trademark matters as he obtained his LL.M. in Trade Regulation, and having worked on intellectual property matters for a law firm in Paris, France while in law school) for purposes of matters such as a patent infringement lawsuit brought by a major U.S. manufacturer against an overseas company and defending clients against claims of trade secret misappropriation. One of Nick's most recent engagements included the representation of a major ohio utility company in a natural gas distribution rate case before the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio.
Nick is fluent in French and Hungarian, and is also proficient in German. Between college and law school, he worked for the U.S. Embassy in Budapest, Hungary, and in college, worked for the World Trade Center Cleveland. Nick frequently serves as a volunteer judge for the Moot Court and Lawyering Skills Program at his alma mater, the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. In his spare time, Nick is a competitive tennis and table tennis player, and is active in the local Hungarian-American Community.
